The weather is getting warm.  Are you ready for the pool?   We are counting down the days to Memorial Day.

Just arrived!  Speedo girls swimsuits size 4-10.  Arent these adorable?  And what’s even better is their price!  They are on sale now for $21.99 marked down from $35.99.  You won’t have to spend alot of money to get a cute suit for your little girl.  And while you’re here we have the best selection in town of Speedo and TYR goggles for children in  fun, funky colors that the kids will love starting at just $9.99.  Our goggles are anti-fog and UV resistant to protect little eyes from the glaring sun.  They are good for swim team, swim lessons or just playing around in the pool. These goggles won’t fall off when the kids dive in during a swim meet and are easy to adjust.  We all know the worst thing that can happen is for your goggles to fall off during a big race!  If you’re like us, you are walking along the side of the pool cheering on your 5 year old son so he can make it to  the other end of the pool (without holding on to the lane line the whole way) during his 25 freestyle!  It’s so much fun!

The Summer Swimming Life – David

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011
westwd10 - 146

This post comes to us today from David East, a long-time Disco Sports customer and friend – and a 13-year summer swim team veteran.
We asked David if he might write up a bit about the experience of being part of a summer swim team, and he said he was happy to! So without further ado…

There are lots of ways for kids to spend their summer vacation. Many of age to get a summer jobs, some go to summer camp, and a good chunk do…not much at all. For me, summer vacation from the age of 5 to 18 meant one thing – swim team. For 13 years, I spent the majority of my summer time at Southampton Recreation Association and swam for the team. Southampton is part of the James River Aquatic Club, and competes with 19 other area pools. I can’t imagine a better way to have spent my summers, and I hope to encourage any kids and parents thinking of getting involved in a summer swim team to do so – and to explain what that involves.

A rec club swim team such as Southampton’s is a pretty sizable affair, as it covers ages as young as 5 and as old as 18. Depending on the pool size, a given swim team could range from as few as 20 to hundreds of kids. The team is divided into age divisions: Mites (8 and under), Midgets (9-10), Juniors (11-12), Intermediates (13-14), and Seniors (15-18). Each team generally has one head coach and 2-4 assistant coaches (usually themselves graduates of the team).

The time commitment for the swimmer and their family is as big or small as you like. Practices are typically held twice a day for each age group, and swimmers are encouraged to come to at least one a day (and many come to both). Meets, or competitions between 2 teams, are held once a week in the afternoon/evening. Meets are great fun for the swimmers, and quite an event for the teams. They can last (very much dependent on the team sizes) as long as 8+ hours all told – though the requirement for any 1 swimmer is much much less. Swimmers will have usually 1-4 events a meet, and compete in heats based on previous times (or the coach’s estimate if they have none). There are 6 meets a summer, with 1 Championship meet between all 20 teams  (a big 2 day event itself).

While these are competing teams, it is by no means exclusive to talented swimmers. On the contrary, all skill levels are welcome (and in face needed). This is the significant difference in summer rec teams and year-round competitive organizations like USA Swimming (Poseidon, Nova, etc).

That being said, JRAC swimmers are passionate about their teams! It’s no rare occurrence to see the young Mites and Midgets crowded at the end of one of their team’s Seniors during a race, cheering them on excitedly. Teams often pick a theme for the summer to play on as added fun an motivation, and the getups at the championship meet can be pretty wild.

Its every great cliche thing you can say about being part of a team – I developed in a sport I love, was passionate about my team, made friends for life, and had somewhere I called home as readily as the house I lived in. The inclusiveness of summer swimming is something I didn’t appreciate until it was behind me – but the ability of any swimmer or any skill level, age, or gender to be a true part of the team is really a special thing.

Let me put it this way. This is the kind of stuff your child will write their college essay on about how it was an integral part of their development and made them a better, more well-rounded person. This is the kind of stuff you want your kids involved in. Trust me.

Celebrating Dance with Karen Lynn

dancers

National Dance Week is a big week for dancers.  Studios and venues holding events all around the country are celebrating all forms of dance this week from Ballet to Tap Dance to African Dancing.  Dance is such an important part of culture and history.

My first experience with dancing was at Marion Mease’s ballet studio when I was 5 years old.  We wore blue, textured,  short sleeved leotards with matching tutus, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes.  I remember loving that tutu.  We would do our “work” on the barre and then try our backbends over Mrs Mease’s giant rolling pin (that’s what it looked like to me from a five year old’s perspective).  Then it was time to change into our tap shoes.  The teacher directed,“Shuffle step. Shuffle step!”  and we stomped as loudly as we could to make  tapping  sounds.  I’m sure we sounded like a stampede of elephants.

I stopped dancing for a period until I met Bob Pemberton who was the most amazing dancer I’d ever seen.  I remember seeing him in a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and watching him moonwalk across the stage.  He offered dance classes down in Church Hill and my mom would pick up a group of us and we’d pack into the station wagon and head down to class.  Mr. Pemberton scared us!  He was very strict and preached about self discipline.  I was at an extremely awkward age at the time and he didn’t have any patience for my whining.  I continued studying with him until other activities became more interesting to me.

When I graduated from college I met Judy Matassa.  I was in the Miss Richmond Pageant and she choreographed the opening number.  I could sing,  but had forgotten how to point my toes! I found a pivot turn difficult.  I sang in her dance recital the next month and had a great time being backstage with all of the dancers.  I loved watching them scurry around and rush to change into the next costume.  The next fall I joined Mrs. Matassa’s “The Dance Studio” and took ballet.  I was 23 years old and all of the girls in my class were between 12 and 18 years old.  They thought I was old.  I learned the fundamentals of ballet and even took a pointe ballet class.  The pointe class allowed me to develop a true appreciation for the dancers on pointe.  My feet got strong.  I had the shortest legs in the class but when I danced, I felt beautiful.  I’d never moved my body that way.  I didn’t realize what my body could do.

During National Dance Week I remember fondly all of the people and classes that gave me a true appreciation and love for dance.  I’ve become more aware of the space around me, my posture, and so much more!  When I started the dance department at Disco Sports I hoped to cater to the new and growing dancer.  After nearly eight “back to school” seasons, we have seen so many girls from two years old to college age and beyond come to our store for their dance essentials.  Even though I’m on sabbatical from dancing  (due to my responsibility of raising 3 small boys) I still get to see the energy and spirit in their eyes when they find the perfect leotard and feel the way their new shoes hug their feet. Thank you to all of the inspiring people who have a love of dance!

P.E. or Not, Kids Need Activity!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Our governor recently vetoed SB 966 which would have required public schools to provide 150 minutes of physical education per week for all elementary and middle school students. While we cannot disagree with the logic of saving our struggling schools a ton of money over the long term we are saddened that P.E. is the sacrificial lamb.

“While thanking the legislators who encouraged the bill, he suggested other means for children to get plenty of activity by hitting the soccer fields and basketball courts while spending less time in front of computers and video games.”

Thankfully spring in Richmond is rife with opportunities for us to get our youngsters out and active. For soccer fans the Richmond Kickers and the Richmond Strikers (www.richmondstrikers.com, www.richmondkickers.com) have a wide range of camps and events for all age groups and skill levels. The Richmond Tennis Association (www.richmondtennis.org) can have your brood lobbing and ground stroking all summer long. We aren’t far away from hearing the clink of bat on ball as T-Ball and Little Leagues start gearing up.

The important thing is this: We need to be active. Active for our kids and ourselves. Some competition, some team building, some graciousness in winning and some humility in defeat. Some sunshine and some sweaty heads and some good, old fashioned grass stains. I don’t know that there is a mobile app for grass stains.

Maybe the governor’s decision was a good one, maybe it wasn’t. But spring is here and it’s our time to govern. Make P.E. mandatory in your life! Vote YES for fun!

Kathy – Coaching Little League Softball

softball

As soon as I was too old to play Little League softball, I decided the next best thing was coaching. Playing at Tuckahoe Little League was such a great experience for me, it was too hard to just leave it behind.

Working with girls I had watched grow up really helped me feel connected to the teams, and I enjoyed watching them play, knowing they were having fun just as I was when in their shoes.

I loved passing down my experiences to my players and having them learn from me, as I had from so many awesome coaches throughout my time in the program. Leading my players through close games and tough losses taught me the difficulties of coaching – something I had never understood, always being a player. I learned patience and tolerance, as well as encouragement and leadership, and enjoyed every minute I was on the field.

Though my life has gotten too hectic to volunteer at Tuckahoe, I hope to one day go back into coaching. I, for one, learned many life lessons on the softball field, whether it be wisdom passed down from a coach or picking up knowledge from another player. I hope to pass my good experiences playing Little League softball down to girls of a new generation, in hopes that they will have as much fun on the field as I did.

Disco Sports Loves VCU!

VCU

To get to do what we love every day – supporting the Richmond sports community and the fine people in it – is already such an awesome thing. But every now and then we get to experience a big sports event with Richmond that is a whirlwind of activity, excitement, and hometown pride – and for these special occasions we’re the luckiest little sports shop in the world. VCU’s run in this year’s NCAA Tournament was amongst the most exciting we’ve ever seen – and the first time we’ve had a blog to say thank you – to VCU and to the people of Richmond.

Of course March Madness is always an exciting time for us here – everyone gets excited about their favorite teams, we get to talk match-ups and brackets with customers all day, and it’s just a good time to be a sports fan.But this year was something special when UofR and VCU received their bids. Then the Richmond Schools Upset Spectacular began, and we were off to the races.

Right from the selection special we saw the excitement start boiling. That’s what’s so great about working at a sports store – the store becomes a hub of sports enthusiasts whenever anything exciting is going on. With two teams in the Sweet Sixteen, the City of Richmond was getting national media attention we’ve rarely had in the sports world. We already knew it, but now everyone else was finding out too – Richmond is a city with a lot of passionate and proud citizens.

VCU’s run was something special. From the widespread doubt about their selection to the extra first round game they had to play – VCU played with something to prove. And what they proved was they could stand toe to toe with any team in the nation – and win convincingly. At the same time, the VCU student body and the City of Richmond proved they could show the kind of passion and dedication to their team usually associated with programs like UNC and Kansas.

It was our distinct pleasure to be a part of it with you all, Richmonders. And to the team: congratulations on what was an amazing tournament run, and thank you for inspiring levels of Richmond and VCU pride unlike anything I’ve seen before.

I must say, I think I could get used to this hyper-level of RVA/VCU pride!

Working at Disco Sports – Kathy

One of the best decisions I’ve made in my life was applying for a job at Disco Sports. When I was sixteen and a very shy, junior at Godwin High School, I was nervous to apply at a store I had so often been in, buying softball equipment and shoes, as well as bathing suits and New York Giants gear.

I always left feeling completely satisfied with the employees who helped me, and was afraid I wouldn’t be able to engage with my customers the way Disco employees did with me.  Looking back to that first summer I worked for Disco, timidly trying dance shoes on little girls and sizing kids up for bathing suits, I realize how much I’ve grown as a person.

Disco has allowed me to become an outgoing, personable employee and has boosted my confidence ten fold.  I owe this all to the amazing staff that has become my family.  The Helds, as well as managers and my fellow part timers, have earned my trust and respect throughout the four years I’ve worked here, and in turn have helped me through a lot of growing up.  I couldn’t appreciate more the family atmosphere that Disco provides for its employees.

Everyone here treats me with a respect and kindness that I could only dream of earning from an employer.  It’s also nice to be able to have a little fun at work every once in a while!  I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity I have been given, in working here for four years, and for the people that have made working at Disco such an amazing experience for me.
