“One Team…One Mission”

Ever heard of the Virginia Hornets? Established in 1994, The Virginia Hornets are Richmond’s only Major League Football team. They have had two UFL Super Bowl Championships and in 2007, won the Metro Bowl National Championship.

This season is especially exciting for the Hornets as they will play their home games at the Richmond City Stadium. Also this season the team introduces their very own cheering squad named The HONEY

The Virginia Hornets are unique in that they have a strong focus on their community they serve. The team values their motto, “One Team…One Mission.” They stress the importance of family values and the need to make a positive impact on the lives of youth in the community.

Many of the Virginia Hornets are high school and college standouts or players that have faced setbacks in their path towards success. The opportunity to be a part of this special semi-pro football team gives the players a chance to play the sport that they love.

Swim Team

Throughout most of my life I have submerged myself in the sport of swimming. In my high school years it was obvious that my summers would be spent lifeguarding as the pool was an area I found myself very familiar with. Spending my past three summers as a lifeguard I was definitely able to walk away with some great memories.
Swim team has always been a very big sport in my neighborhood and it was an awesome opportunity to lifeguard many swim meets and continue my joy in watching the sport of swimming. Swim team is a great opportunity to come together as a community and allow kids to get exercise and meet other kids who have a passion for the sport in their area. Many of my close friends are former swimmers that I have grown up with. Take advantage of a swim team near you!

Cheering 101

We were watching some kids play some rec league soccer the other day and the seeming incessant chant from a group of nearby parents was, “Big Kick!  Big Kick!”  It seems that every other parent is a sideline coach and the message is not always helpful.

The actual coach stresses team play in his practices and pushes each player to make the most of his or her position.  The parents in question were encouraging their little Johnny’s and Jane’s to engage in a sort of soccer/volleyball hybrid with a succession of cross field kicks going back and forth between the two teams.  Maybe they should have let the coach coach.

We’ve all certainly seen the images of violence at youth sporting events so there is surely no need to discuss the importance of sportsmanship among the parents.  Knute Rockne said, “One man practicing sportsmanship is better than fifty preaching it.”  More important, perhaps, is discussing our role as parents and spectators.

We’ve talked before about the value of team sports.  Team sports for kids builds character, promotes fair play, builds self-esteem, and creates character traits that children will carry into adulthood.

Be a booster!  Celebrate victories and soothe losses.  Encourage gracious losing and congratulate the things that went well on the pitch today.  “You guys got in some great shots today!” or “you must have spent a lot of time practicing your passing!  It really showed!”

Remember, the shouted encouragement to “run faster!” or “catch it!” can often have a discouraging effect.  Your child is perhaps running as fast as he can and perhaps doesn’t yet have the hand/eye coordination to make the play you desire to see.

Most importantly, remember that you’ve chosen a “team” sport for your child.  Your kid is a member of a group with other kids.  Each of those kids has a parent who is a #1 fan.  Those kids are playing against another group of like-minded kids with another group of rabid fan-parents.  They all deserve our respect and our support.

Just maybe not our coaching help.  Leave that for the Coach.

Not the Only Game in Town

We’re sure that you’re aware of our commitment to Richmond’s Flying Squirrels.  We’re nuts about Nutzy and are so full of Squirrel pride that we gave him his own department here at the store:  Nutzy’s Nest!  But the Flying Squirrels aren’t the only game in town.

Richmond is the home of a world-class soccer club:  The Kickers.

The Kickers were born in May of 1993 and for the past 17 years have been racking up wins and fans.  They started their play at the University of Richmond and still throw down an occasional match at City Stadium but moved in August of 2010 to the 34-acre Ukrop Park in Chesterfield County.  Their players have represented Richmond with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, the Colorado Rapids and D.C. United.  They were recently proud to see defender Henry Kalungi called up for the Uganda National Team in the Africa Cup of Nations 2012 matches.

While the Kickers recently inked a deal with Union First Market Bank, which gives them naming rights to the facility, the name Ukrop isn’t far from the team.  Over an 11 year career, star forward Rob Ukrop racked up 222 appearances, 69 goals, and 29 assists for 167 points.  After retiring his jersey the Kickers were pleased to see him inducted into the USL Hall of Fame.  While retired from pro soccer Rob still maintains a high Richmond presence.

In addition to a great pro club the Kickers have a ton of affiliate clubs and programs.  They have a great program with the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, youth rec programs, and an after school program: the Little Kicks that starts youngsters striking and running as young as 2 years old.

The Kickers stay active in the community also.  They hosted a coaches meeting offering information on the dangers of concussions and they teamed up with Martin’s and the Central Virginia Food Bank to Kick Out Hunger in May.  They love to work with youth and have worked with the YMCA, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and spend a ton of time in our local schools.

Take a minute and check out some of their camps.  Stop by and see us for some cleats and shin guards and Get Kicking!
